Declaration by TB-affected communities and community representatives

Feb 07, 2019

The declaration features TB survivors and champions, journalists and civil society and community representatives.

New Delhi: The knowledge and lived experiences of people who have survived and been affected by TB is fundamental to strengthening the TB response globally, and in India. Though we have been witnessing a gradual increase in the engagement of affected communities, it is now time for this to be scaled up and accelerated for more tangible impact.

It is our collective and moral responsibility to ensure that the affected communities are empowered to become valuable partners in the response to TB.

In this context:

  • We call on all stakeholders to recognise and acknowledge affected communities as central to the fight against TB and meaningfully engage with affected communities.

  • We call on The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and donor countries to invest substantially in communities to create a person-centred, rights-based and gender-sensitive response to TB.

  • We call on the Government of India to ensure that the National Strategic Plan for 2017 – 2025 is fully funded and effectively implemented.

  • We call on the media to act as powerful change agents by consistently keeping the conversation around TB alive.

In turn, we, as the affected community and community representatives, commit to:

  1. Supporting the government in their efforts to achieve a people-centred and rights-based response

  2. Partnering with service providers to reach the last mile care and support

  3. Serving as an early-warning system by sharing real-time information

  4. Contributing to effective planning and implementation of the National TB programme, drawing on our lived experiences of TB.

This statement reflects the discussions ahead of and at ‘Conversations’ – A TB Centrestage Discussion, held in New Delhi yesterday, featuring TB survivors and Champions, journalists and civil society and community representatives.

The meeting was organised by REACH and Touched by TB, with the support of The Stop TB Partnership and held in the run-up to the Preparatory Meeting for the 6th Replenishment of the Global Fund and Launch of the Investment Case in New Delhi on 7-8 February 2019.
